Hikers climb through a burned out area with little shade. An early morning start and a good supply of water are recommended. Campsites can be found at Duck Creek. Or if you prefer, a 1-mile lateral trail leads to Duck Lake and good camping. Two miles farther, the trail dips to Purple Lake and then climbs a short hill to Lake Virginia. The John Muir Trail begins at the O.W. Railroad Bridge and winds 44 miles through the Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area. There is also a spur loop trail that can extend this hike to 50 miles. John Muir Trail follows right hand side of the river through this section of the Big South Fork. Photo Todd Ratermann.
